Posted in another thread, but @GabeD previously said that Level 1 Violations come with prescribed penalties. That is correct, but there is discretion in giving the penalties. See (https://web3.ncaa.org/lsdbi/bylaw?bylawId=36206) Fig 19-1 of NCAA Bylaws. There are different categories of NCAA violations (Aggravation, Standard and Mitigation). As you can see, postseason ban is not required for "Mitigation" violation. Given the language in the release about exemplary cooperation and all other mitigating factors, not sure why the postseason ban was given - especially given others in similar situations.

Looking through NCAA Major Violations Database (https://web3.ncaa.org/lsdbi/search?q=&types=major) you can see other violations and you can see them by Level of Violations.

A quick look shows at least 3 Level I violations within the past 2 years that did not receive a post-season ban

Louisiana at Monroe (https://web3.ncaa.org/lsdbi/search/miCaseView/report?id=102709). This case is clearly more egregious than ours as a basketball assistant coach did class work for 2 players and hid information from investigators. No postseason ban, only 2 years probation and no recruiting prohibitions.

There are others on the site with similar Level 1 violations and no post-season ban.

Again - it seems are penalties are way out of line with what others have received, even if it is a Level 1 violation
