I'm going to preface this by saying if Drew is far and away the 2nd best QB then I'd be on board with him playing.
The main reason I think he should redshirt though is that, compared to our other QB's, his body seems less mature. He's got a big frame but right now he is lanky and slim. A year being able to focus on Ivey's S&C program would probably allow him to get up to 215-220 lbs. The SEC has some dogs in it and without the proper strength I'm worried that he could sustain injuries that could follow him throughout his career.
It would be a shame if he had chronic back or shoulder injuries because he was thrown into the pit too early.
I do think he has the highest ceiling and will probably turn into the best of the bunch with time.
Making him the 2nd team QB can have some serious long-term consequences. I'd imagine it would cause Zanders to seriously consider a transfer and Printz to consider leaving the team after he graduates. Not saying this would happen I'm just saying the situation could lead to that. Our depth could take a huge hit.
Another thing to consider is that if he skips the redshirt AND Maty remains the starter throughout his eligibility, then you lose 2 years of what many of us think is a star in the making.
I understand getting him ready to play now, but I think as long as Printz or Zanders keep the competition close, I think you play the safe route and get Drew ready for the long haul.
I also think this talk of Pinkel knowing he won't be around for four years is silly. There is no way you can predict that until someone has played for a season.
