Study Links Marijuana Use To Increased Risk Of Heart Attack, Stroke
The New York Times (2/28, Ryan) reports, “People who frequently smoke marijuana have a higher risk of heart attack and stroke, according to” an “analysis of responses to the US government’s annual survey on behavioral risk from 2016 to 2020.” About 4% of survey respondents “reported daily marijuana use, which the researchers suggested raised the chance of a heart attack by 25% and of a stroke by 42%.”NBC News (2/28, Syal) says the research also showed that “people who used marijuana just once a week had a 3% increased likelihood of a heart attack and 5% higher risk of a stroke during the study time frame.” Published Wednesday in the Journal of the American Heart Association, the research “adds to the growing body of evidence suggesting marijuana may be harmful to the cardiovascular system.”
