To direct some attention away from the football coach search and the miserable state of the basketball program, I wanted to share that I met a most interesting former Tiger football player this week. While sitting at a car dealership in Jeff City getting my car serviced, I got to talking to a couple of guys who had M U logo sweats on. One of the guys pointed to an older, burly gentleman and said "this guy used to play football at M U". I asked the guy his name and he said his name was Charley Bull and he said he played at M U from 1951 till 1954 under Don Faurot. Said he started all four years (freshmen were eligible for varsity because of the Korean War) and played both ways--offensive tackle and defensive end. I asked where he was from and what weight he played at and he said he played in high school at Maplewood H S in St. Louis and played in college at 195 pounds. Had great stories about playing in the Big 7 (think Oklahoma A & M was not yet a member of the Big 8), playing for Faurot, having Clay Cooper and Harry Smith as assistant coaches, and games against Oklahoma with Bud Wilkinson as coach. Charley said he was 86 years old but he looked and acted much younger. Shook hands with him and he had a tremendous grip. He did say he thought he probably played more minutes than any other former Tiger. Played both ways (60 minutes) in every game for 4 years. Very much enjoyed my visit with this fine gentleman!
