The first one can go a long way for Gavin Honore.
The Santa Ana (Cali.) Mater Dei slot receiver picked up his first SEC offer from Missouri safeties coach Jacob Yoro after a spring football workout Jan. 16. The scholarship meant a little extra for Honore.
"For me, it was honestly one of my most exciting offers yet," Honore said. "It's Missouri, it's SEC. If you want to be the best, you've got to be at the best. Especially at Mizzou, they've got a really good receiver core over there. I like their coaches. They really have a good connection with how they coach their receivers."
While not getting more than 30 seconds with Yoro after the practice, Honore received his offer from the Tigers over text message a few hours later. That early interest in Honore sparked the Class of 2027 three-star to look into visiting Missouri for this spring.
"I feel like they're really recognizing the state of California more," Honore said. "I honestly feel like California has the best skill (position players). ... They're trying to get the best from everywhere, especially the West Coast."
In his first true varsity season in 2024, Honore totaled over 500 all-purpose yards and six touchdowns. An eye-opening experience, the 5-foot-10, 175-pound receiver learned to embrace the competition within a powerhouse program.
Missouri has a top quarterback target at Mater Dei in Class of 2026 three-star Ryan Hopkins, who transferred from San Juan Capistrano (Cali.) JSerra Catholic at semester. Ever since Hopkins arrived, he's built a relationship with Honore, one of his new targets. The two also compete in track and field together.
"He's a really good guy," Honore said. "We talk about Missouri all the time and how he's going to go up there soon. He loves the program, and we both talk back and forth about how we want to go up there. The relationship is good, and we're excited to see what happens this next season."
