HCBO with a modicum of success could be the Missouri football coach for the next twenty years, to improve his odds, he needs to learn to effectively separate himself a few degrees from his players. He is a Missouri alum, but he is no longer a college kid ... act like a leader ... be fair, be firm, but be a leader.
In the 'lollygagging' scene from Bull Durham, the Manager was lamenting to Crash Davis after the game, another loss ...
Joe ... I've tried everything, I've pleaded, I've begged, I'm a nice guy, don't you think I'm a nice guy?
Crash ... **** 'em, they're kids, scare 'em.
Joe ... hmmm, yeah scare 'em.
Joe ... entering the shower room with an armful of baseball bats ... launches them at the players feet, players scramble ...
Joe ... everybody in the shower room now! Larry, everybody NOT in the shower in five seconds gets fined $100.
Larry ... one mississippi, two mississippi ...
Joe ... you guys lollygag around the field, you lollygag around the bases ... you know what that makes them Larry?
Larry ... Lollyggagers.
Missouri football players weren't exactly lollygaggers on the field, maybe they were just young, but they seemed to often react to game momentum instead of forcing it. I loved the way the offense set the tone in the second half of the season and really appreciated the defensive effort against Texas. I really want to see them get to the next level.
Football players in general liked to pushed and challenged, Missouri players, most who are recruited feeling they are underrated by the star system, love to prove the doubters wrong. HCBO doesn't need to be their buddy, the recruits already buy into the family atmosphere established by their peers, he needs to set the bar high and challenge them to meet attain that level.
Hopefully he will grow into this type of coach sooner than later, realizing these kids want to be men and are willing to sacrifice to do so.
