Also going to compare a bit to Taylor Swift here who has a similar situation.

SO Dave Chappelle is mad that ViacomCBS sold syndication of Chappelle Show to HBO (Warner Media) and Netflix. Chappelle is mad because he did not receive any of the profits from said sale.

Dave Chappelle didnt' get paid much for the first 2 seasons of The Chappelle Show. He says he was 28 and had a new baby and had to sign the contract, so he wasn't in a good spot and Comedy Central (Viacom) took advantage of that. I can agree with that a bit. Here's the thing though. Viacom gave Chappelle a HUGE contract for the next contract, $50 million. Chappelle took it, but then decided he didn't want to do the show any more and took off. That's fine, but he should remember that Viacom did try to do right by him with that contract and he split.

SO Chappelle is mad and he told his fans not to watch the show until Viacom pays him for syndicating it. He even demanded Netflix remove it. Netflix obliged. That's a lot of power Chappelle wields right there. But I don't see how that punishes Viacom. They sold rights to show to Netflix (unless they get paid per streamed episode) and they still got paid. This seems like those "Patriots" who dumped out French Champagne in protesting the French in the early 2000s. You already bought it, u aren't punishing the seller. This also helps Netflix's competition, Warner Media, since they have rights to the show too and now are the only ones streaming it. Thus Netflix loses twice on this. Netflix is also paying Chappelle a TON of money, $60 million.

Also, Chappelle's actions here fly in the face of his comments with David Letterman years ago after he left the Chappelle Show, that the benefit of having $10M or $50M is miniscule.

I love Dave Chappelle. He is a comedic genius. And he is phenomenal when breaking down social issues. But I think he is kind of in the wrong here and I think he is taking the wrong approach. He should add a ton more episodes of the CHappelle SHow, flood the market, thus devaluing the old ones. That's how you get back at Viacom.

Compared to Taylor Swift who is mad at her old label, Big Machine. They own the rights to her song and won't pay her for them. She is flooding the content with new music and playing new versions of her old songs. That's fine. I really don't care for her, but my kids love Bad Blood since it was in the trailer for Ninjago the Movie.
