We have talked a lot about our lack of quality depth at the point. We have also talked a lot about our trending toward positionless basketball. So, lets examine what we have.
Currently there are 13 full scholarships! 2 are going to be transfers that will need to sit a year and 1 on a medical. That leaves is with 10 scholarship players that should be ready to play by first game. We will also have at least one walk on that looks to be an option that could very well see the court more than the last 1-2 minutes of mop up!
2 guys we are calling pgs Geist & Pinson, 1-2 we call PFs/Cs Tilmon & Nikko, 3 we can call a stretch 4 Jontay, Smith and Puryear, and 3 we think of as wings Watson, Santos & Picket.
So lets make an assumption here. A stretch if you will. The stretch 4s are probably working a lot on their own brand of ball handling, passing & their various shots this off season. Even Tilmon might be moved into this category. And the PF/C could be working on anything, but they need to concentrate on there rebounding, positioning and being able to score inside.
That leaves what most may be thinking about, pg and wings. Wings also need to be working hard on movement driving, passing, screening shooting etc.
The PGs are just 2 by name, but we do have one more player that can take a lot of that load this year and I will be surprised if CCM doesn't have this on the table for his thinking. That is Jontay in particular. Why? Because he has good basketball smarts, he is 6-11 and will be able to see the floor well. He can take some of the PGs load as needed in getting players in position and intitiating the play.
He will probably see a lot of that part of a pg's duties this year. He is already a pretty good passer, a good shooter and as I said smart in the basketball sense. Making sure he can get on CCM's page is important this summer and fall.
It's not like a player like him has never done it before. Bird comes to mind and I'm sure there are others in the more recent years.
How well will it get done? I have no more idea than anyone else. So much will depend on the off season the kids are having.
