So, recaps have been a little light of late. Was on vacation week and the last two offered little that I wanted to take time away from my time away to dissect. But hey, got a winner today.
1. If you drew up a statistical "keys to the game," mine would've been:
--control the glass (check; Tigers were +17 and +5 on the offensive side)
--control Mason Jones (check; wait, you may say 17 and 5 is solid...it is, but on 3-14 shooting with 4 turnovers and coming off a stretch of 3 games with 104 points...yeah, that's a good job)
--control the ball (Arkansas was very good at turnover ratio, but was only +3 today)
--control the line (Tigers were +5 in ft attempts and +6 in makes on 44! Attempts); as an aside, Arkansas had 6 players with 29+ minutes. No other had more than 6. Of those 6, 4 fouled out and the 2 others had 4. Good on Mizzou for making that a priority.
2. Arkansas is a solid team. One that certainly benefitted from a light non-con, but still decent. Isaiah Joe is a very good player. He was out today. Arkansas, much like Mizzou, didnt have the depth in talent to overcome that loss in a road league game. That's a thing.
3. Props to the home crowd today. Clear to see the Tigers fed off the energy all the while supporting a great cause. In an otherwise dismal season, certainly a day to count blessings.
4. Co-players of the game goes to a pair of sophomores. Pinson and Pickett combined for 38 points and 13 boards (plus 16-20 at the line). More importantly, they set the tone of attacking the paint. They combined took 27 shots, 20 of which came inside the arc. It wasn't always pretty, but for a team that can't hit water from a boat, that's the way you have to go for wins. If only the third wheel in their class would adjust his spam filter so he too could read the memoranda.
5. I keep telling myself I'm going to track shots through a full game. Not just makes and misses plus location, but also too whether it was a product of a good look out of the offense. I'm curious to see our percentage of shots that are good/proper shots and our % on those. I feel the former is pretty high, and the latter is laughably low. It's absurd how many good looks we cannot convert. It has bled over into other aspects of their play of late, but not today.
6. Hogs have parlayed a rough stretch of Mizzou hoops into a 2-6 record at Mizzou arena. That's a shame.
