I was asked to join a d1 athletic depts covid oversight team last year. It was full of academic types who were more interested in publishing whatever their recs were then actually overseeing athletes and finding ways for them to play that appeased state and county guidelines (why the AD asked me to join as he knew I’m a sports fan).
during the process and review of other conferences it became very apparent that all ADs across country were fiscally insolvent without football.
I began thinking they were this “essential workers” and as such should have been vaccinated despite their age etc. however this would have likely brought up title 9 and required vaccination of gymnastics and the money loss sports.
i then sort of got stuck in a mental circle and never pursued it further. Was going to write opinion piece to NY times about athletes (men’s football and basketball) as essential workers but my dept chair talked me out of it.
anyone have thoughts on this? Ignoring COVID wasn’t an option w state and county and NCAA guidelines.
Are they essential workers? Very split on this personally….
