No practice today but we did talk to Tre'Vez Johnson, Mookie Cooper, Joshua Manning, Toriano Pride and Zion Young.
Most said their camp or scrimmage standouts were freshman CB Cameron Keys. The 6-foot, 166-pounder is making his presence felt literally. His teammates describe him as tough and physical and said he had a pair of decent tackles in scrimmage yesterday. I think Toriano mentioned that Keys had a TFL and a blitz that had the defense buzzing. Drink already said Keys has been a standout but he seems like a guy that I would expect to get a special teams role this year possibly.
CB Nic DeLoach is another person who was shouted out. Manning said DeLoach has slowed down a bit with his good technique because that means he probably isn't biting on as many routes or fakes or whatever the case may be.
Toriano Pride has earned the title of the biggest trash-talker on the team. He's a quiet person but when he gets on the field he admits he likes to troll players. He told us around the middle of last season he wanted to transfer over to Mizzou because of his close ties to STL mostly.
Tre'Vez Johnson said at least 10 times the defense hasn't lost a step. He said people should be as excited for the defense as he is. Tre'Vez is a chill and humble guy. He doesn't show much emotion but every time he was asked about another defensive player's improvement he just kept saying they haven't lost a step with a smile or grin on his face.
Joshua Manning has embraced his role on special teams and has gotten better at contested catches. Said he was using the jugs football machines a lot in the offseason making sure he caught 100+ passes a day.
Young has been working on pass rush and stopping the run this offseason. Again, he looks like the DE2 at this moment. He did say he isn't playing that Joker role this offseason yet. Remember that player is supposed to be able to rush the passer but also get out into the flat or go into coverage a bit.
Stories coming out every day so i can't spill the beans too much but here are some thoughts from the recent presser.
