1. Hot start offensively
I was really impressed with the hot start for the offense. Three straight touchdowns to start the game is something I’ve never seen in my time covering the team. Those drives were for 87, 75 and 57 yards and all of them lasted no more than three minutes and 45 minutes.
Brady Cook was 8-of-10 for 162 yards and a touchdown in the first quarter.
2. Balanced offensive game
Just to brighten up the mood before we get to the mistake. It was a great day on the ground and through the air. Running back Cody Schrader had his first three-touchdown game as a Tiger. He had 13 rushes for 114 yards and three touchdowns.
Brady Cook completed 30-of-47 for 395 yards and two touchdowns. He also had two interceptions (one returned for a touchdown) and a fumble.
Mizzou had 527 yards of total offense, averaged eight yards per play and 13.1 yards per completion.
It wasn't the result Mizzou fans want obviously, but this offense can hang with the best of them. So, they can take solace in that.
3. Mishaps
A lot of bad plays. Johnny Walker getting disqualified for receiving two personal conduct penalties. I heard the first one may have been for kicking a player (on a play he was injured on, ironically) and the referee’s hot mic allowed the stadium to hear that he spit on another player.
Overall, there were 11 penalties for Mizzou. Just way too many. Three of them were for disconcerting signals, which I had never heard of during a game. Apparently, that's simulating the other team's snap count.
Connor Tollison had an illegal snap with 1:52 left in the game on third and six. Then, Cook fumbled on the next play and lost like 20 yards to set up fourth and 32.
There was a 17-yard punt, a blocked field goal and then Cook threw his first interception of the season. Blown coverage on the LSU go-ahead touchdown that left receiver Malik Nabers wide-open for the go-ahead score.
The cherry on the sundae was Cook's pick-six returned for a touchdown.
This was a game in which Missouri was up 22-7. A lot of its mistakes were on them.
It gave the game away.
