Can we stop chalking this season up as an expected down year? Can we start evaluating this season as what it is? It’s been unacceptable. Cuonzo’s worst season was 12-21. This season is quickly trending to something similar to that. Yes, I think it was reasonable to expect this year to be worse than last year. I also think there’s a difference between a .500 ish season and a 12-21 season. This is looking like a major setback.
I still think Gates is a good coach and the right man for the job. He’s doing a hell of a job recruiting and has a track record that shows he will be successful, but I’m already starting to look at next year. How many guys on this roster can significantly contribute next year? The only 2 I feel confident in are Bates and Ant Robinson. Maybe Shaw. The goal should be to get back to the tourney next year. We have a great recruiting class coming in, but a team lead by freshman is probably not getting in the tourney. Gates needs to hit big in the portal to make the tourney a possibility. Is that realistic coming off this season?
