My last post on Gates bcuz it's generally pointless to try to change people's opinion, but...
This board has long made four big complaints about our teams the last 8 years:
1. The system/scheme is boring to watch
2. We have no player development
3. Our offensive game plan is inefficient
4. Recruiting and talent evaluation suck
So, to answer those regarding Gates
1. Scheme: Runs a pressing and trapping scheme that resulted in them being 32nd in the nation in steals and would only become more exciting with the long athletic players that you can land in the SEC, the types of players he's on record as ideally wanting for his system
2. Development: Gates was a player development coach in the nba.
3. Inefficient Offense: his team was 12th in assists per game and 20th in FG%, doesn't get much more efficient than that
4. Recruiting and talent evaluation: was responsible for Recruiting a 5-star that became a top 5 pick and an under the radar guy that became a top 10 nba pick... can't hit much better on recruiting and talent evaluation than that
Other than the fact that most of you didn't know much about him, what is it about Gates that isn't exactly what you've all been screaming for the last 8 years?
And don't take it as me being condescending when I say you hadn't heard of him. MOST people don't follow all the names that deeply. Hell, @GabeD had him low on his lists before realizing more about him and doing an about face... and he follows sports for a living! So, it happens.
Now that you do know about him though, what is the legitimate argument? Is it that he only has a 50-40 record? Do any of you know the context there?
Felton (English's top assitant) was the head coach and didn't part ways until mid-july. Gates wasn't hired until almost August. So, he got to do ZERO recruiting and was far behind the curve year one with installing his entire program and finished 11-21. HOWEVER, the team consistently got so much better as the season went that he still won Conference Coach of the Year.
Since that context driven rough first season, he had won at a .675 clip.
Even with the first season, he has a career conference winning percentage of .644
So, again... why would we not want this guy before he goes and becomes a star somewhere like south carolina?
