Here is a link to the SEC site on the conference bowl selection process;

http://www.secsports.com/article/18165241/bowl-selection-process

Let's make this as simple as we can. There is a 4 step process;

1) the so-called New Year's bowls are selected by the CFP committee. So, in addition to the 4 playoff teams, the CFP will select 4 more teams, and the Orange Bowl has tie ins, that involve the SEC

For the SEC, let's say Alabama, Georgia and Auburn fit this criteria

2) After that, the Citrus Bowl will select an SEC team; that's likely LSU, Mississippi St or S Carolina, but let's assume it's Mississippi St

3) After that, these 6 bowls (termed The Pool of Six), select. Keep in mind, the SEC is also part of the selection process (listed in order of "prestige");

Outback (Tampa); Taxslayer (Jacksonville); Music City (Nashville); Texas (Houston); Belk (Charlotte); Liberty (Memphis)

The SEC can only have 5 other bowl eligible teams (i.e. have won 6 or more games and is not on NCAA probation); LSU, S Carolina, Texas A&M, Kentucky, and Missouri

My guess: Outback (LSU); Taxslayer (S Carolina); Music City (Kentucky); Texas (aTm).

MU would then have the choice of the Belk or Liberty. MU would opt for the Liberty since it would sell the most tickets

4) Now if the SEC would have even more eligible teams, after those bowls., then the Birmingham Bowl picks and THEN, (lastly) the Independence selects

Now, if Auburn loses to Alabama, and is not selected by the CFP, then everybody slides back, so MU could be the choice of the Belk, (unless Texas A&M wants to get out of the state for some reason, in which case the Texas comes into play).

I don't think even a MU loss to ARK would impact this, nor would the selection of a 5 win SEC team (as outlandish as it sounds, Florida, Vandy, Ark, or TN COULD be selected for the post season IF they win their last game, and teams are needed. But with the turmoil, this would be more like MU in 2015 for 3 SEC programs. I would bet Vanderbilt would be the only 5 win team to accept an invitation if offered, and they would likely head to the Birmingham.)

If your heart is set on Graceland, Beal Street, or an overwhelming need to see ducks march in a hotel, then you want to pull for Auburn in the Iron Bowl, to lock up a spot in Memphis......

Let the BBQ threads commence!
