My initial reaction was "He's not going to leave his brother for a similar position." I understand that Oklahoma is a better program than Mizzou and you can argue that coaching all the linebackers is better than coaching half the linebackers, but it's a similar job. I know a lot of the anger and frustration with Glen Elarbee was over that. Everyone understood Josh Heupel leaving because he left for a better job. Elarbee left for the same job and it upset people. Obviously there's a difference in leaving for UCF and leaving for OU, but still, if there was frustration with Elarbee for doing it, I'd bet there would be frustration over the head coach's brother for doing it.

Well, it's more likely than I initially gave credence. The word out of Oklahoma is that Alex Grinch is going to make Brian Odom say no. One source tells me there hasn't been contact or a job offer between the two sides. That may be true or may not be, but it sounds like contact is coming if it hasn't happened yet.

At this point, honestly, it seems like about a 50/50 deal. On Missouri's side is loyalty to his brother, who gave him his first full time assistant coaching job. On Oklahoma's side is it's Oklahoma, where Brian Odom grew up and played (he signed with OU out of high school, redshirted during the national title season in 2000 and played on special teams in 2001 before transferring). Plus, Odom and Grinch have worked together and are friends.

Barry Odom is on the most solid footing he's been on at Missouri. He's clearly here for at least a couple more years and there are reasons to think it will be quite a bit longer. Honestly you could make an argument it is more stable at Mizzou than at OU because the NFL rumors aren't going away with Lincoln Riley any time soon. But, obviously, Riley's not getting fired either, so if you're on his staff, you're probably in a pretty good spot going forward.

It's an interesting situation. If this were 90% of coaches, I think they'd be gone to OU without many thoughts. But the fact that it's the head coach's brother changes the dynamic. We'll update if we get any more info.
