I used to play a game as a kid called Smear the Queer. Basically, we play it in the backyard where each side of the yard was the goal line. We started in the middle of the yard and one kid would pick up the football and try to the goal line, and the other kids would tackle him. If tackled, he would drop the football and someone else would pick it to try to score. Whoever has the most touchdowns won. Simple and easy. Run to score and tackle to prevent a score.
Do away with the confusing gap assignments and just have all 11 guys run to the ball and tackle. Why on earth do we have both LBs running to a gap to the left while the RB is running to his right and goes untouched for a 65 plus yard TD? It has happened in all 4 games. Just scrap the playbook and just play old fashioned football.
Also, each practice from today forward should only be about tackling for the defensive. That is it, just tackling and the 11 best tacklers play.
As HCED and Coach SW has stated, if you cannot stop the run, you are not going to win.
