First, Odom won’t get fired this year so need to get over that. The offense had some costly TOs but also put 31 points on the board, a lot of yardage and I believe won TOP. The O did enough to win despite some bad calls by Dooley if our defense is just dogshit terrible instead shit for brains terrible.
What change should we see after 2019-20 season? It’s time for Walters to go. Our defense has looked terrible under his watch and no position group is getting better. I know everyone wants to say “but BO is a defensive coach” but we all know he stepped back from leading the D to focus on HC duties. Walters fielded one of the worst P5 secondaries in the country last year and a defense that never takes pressure off the O. He owns the D and it’s not getting the job done. He owns the safeties and they looked JV as F tonight. He is Josh Henson v2.0 and was given a P5 coordinator job before he was ready. BO will either force him out or get ran out of his dream job losing games bc of him. Likewise, Andy Hill needs to move on and better utilize that staff spot.
Who should we hire as DC? Jim Leavitt. The Ducks D got better every season under his watch and he has a long track record of coaching up straight nasty defenses. He’s available and he liked a tweet of mine two weeks ago about returning to his alma mater that he didn’t have to. That means nothing to BO but he’s available and he’s a damn good, proven DC. Zero of our D coaches should be viewed as untouchable or irreplaceable. Hatley’s DL have been average, Hargreaves’ LB have been average and our secondary has been dogshit for years.
If you check the CFB scoreboards, tons of upsets today. Ole Miss lost to Memphis, SC lost to a 2-win UNC team, GA Something won at TN, Purdue lost to Nevada and I’m sure there are others. The top third of the SEC West is very good, UGA looks solid and the rest of the SEC is remarkably average.
All teams will get better as the season rolls on, everything we want is still in front of us if we beat the other remarkably average teams in front of us and UGA trips up in a game or two. By the time Mizzou won the Citrus Bowl in 2014 after winning the SEC East, no one remembered or gave a shit about losing to Indiana. We can either dwell on a bad loss or move on and prepare for a very good opportunity to win at home next week. If the Mizzou Tigers of Q1 and Q4 show up the rest of the season, we’ll be fine.
