In the Arizona/FSU game today there was one out and runners on 1st and 3rd with score tied in bottom of the 7th. FSU was the home team. FSU flies deep to left for the second out, runner tags from third and scores easily. The runner on 1st and went 2/3rds of the way to 2nd base and began to retreat to first when the catch was made. She got back to about 20' from 1st when she stopped and started celebrating with the batter/runner as the girl from 3rd scored. The runner on 1st never returned to the base.
1. If Arizona throws to first and touches the base before the runner returned that would have been the 3rd out. Would the run still count?
2. What is the appeal process in this situation? If an umpire realizes the that the runner has abandoned her attempt to return to first, does he call her out or is the coach/player responsible for asking or appealing the situation?
