Release from the SID
OXFORD, Miss. – No. 13 Mizzou Softball (15-4, 2-1 SEC) clinched a win in its Southeastern Conference opening series with a 2-0 game one victory, but fell 9-5 in game two of the doubleheader at Ole Miss on Sunday.
The Tigers only managed two hits in game one but took advantage of four walks and an Ole Miss error to push two runs across the plate. It proved to be enough for Mizzou as freshman RHP Danielle Baumgartner (Mexico, Mo.) and junior RHP Tori Finucane(Germantown, Md.) were sensational in the circle.
Baumgartner and Finucane combined for Mizzou’s fourth shutout win of the season. The game one triumph improved Baumgartner to 7-1 this year. She has held the opposition to one earned run or less in eight of her nine season appearances (six starts).
Finucane came on in relief in the fifth inning and delivered 2.2 shutout frames. The righty also struck out three en route to her first save of the year.
Redshirt senior CF Taylor Gadbois(Maryville, Mo.) swiped two bases for the Tigers, marking her 110th and 111th career stolen bases. She now sits by herself in second place for most stolen bases in Mizzou Softball history.
After being shut down in game one, the Tigers’ offense came out with a vengeance in game two. The top of the order produced three consecutive hits, capped off by a three-run home run from redshirt senior SS Sami Fagan(Dunnellon, Fla.).
The Rebels’ offense had gone silent for most of the weekend as they failed to score a run for 15 consecutive innings. However, things changed in a big way in the third inning as Ole Miss exploded for nine runs on eight hits.
Mizzou cut into the Rebels’ lead with solo home runs by senior RF Emily Crane (Troy, Mo.) and junior UT Chloe Rathburn (Mission Viejo, Calif.) in the fifth inning. The Tigers saw a couple more scoring opportunities in the final two frames but couldn’t produce. Mizzou’s game two loss was its first SEC defeat of the season.
KEY MOMENT (GAME 1)
With Mizzou holding onto a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning, Finucane got the call from the bullpen by head coach Ehren Earleywine. Ole Miss had two runners on with one out but Finucane produced consecutive outs to escape the jam.
