Tigers on top to finish west coast trip

A new weekend means a new tournament for the No. 14 Mizzou Softball Team. After the team’s third consecutive weekend on the West Coast, the Tigers topped off the Judi Garman Tournament in Fullerton, Calif. with a solid 4-1 finish, improving their season record to 13-3.

To kick off the weekend, the Tigers split their first two games, falling to No. 2 Michigan 13-0 and beating San Jose State 8-3. During the Michigan game, the Tigers faced difficulty while allowing nine walks and hitting three batters. The second and fourth innings weren’t too favorable for Mizzou. Michigan dominated, scoring five runs in the second inning and seven runs in the fourth inning. The Tigers, eager for a victory, executed eight runs on seven hits during the San Jose State game with the freshman pitcher, Danielle Baumgartner allowing only one earned run during her four innings. Baumgartner, who continues to stand out, has allowed only one earned run in her four starts this season. Redshirt senior, Taylor Gadbois, completed her first ever career triple while Chloe Rathburn went 1-for-1 and Natalie Fleming went 1-for-2.

After eight strong innings, Mizzou topped California with a 6-5 victory. Center fielder, Taylor Gadbois went 3-for-3 two runs scored and three stolen bases while shortstop, Sami Fagan went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. To put Mizzou on top, Paige Bange (Jefferson City, Mo.), in her first career start, had a sacrifice fly in the second inning. Emily Crane had a solo home run in the third inning to put the Tigers up 2-0. Paige Lowary held all of California’s batters until allowing a RBI single in the fourth inning. Fagan scored a two-run home run in the fifth inning followed by California scoring two more runs and then another in the sixth inning sending the game into extra innings. After some back-and-forth, the Tigers achieved their 11th victory of the season.

To end the West Coast tournament, the Mizzou Softball team earned a victory against No. 17 Arizona State, 8-0, and No. 22 Baylor, 10-4. During the game against Arizona State, Mizzou accomplished at least one run in six out of seven innings, and during the Baylor game, Mizzou ended on top after a Baylor had a series of errors. With her third start, Paige Bange had a solo home run in the fourth inning. Emily Crane, Regan Nash and Chloe Rathburn were also star batters during the final game.
