Reading through Gabe’s daily breakdowns of the search, one thing that caught my eye early on, was Gabe’s mentioning Gates and that the more he researched him, the more he liked him.
It reminded me of something similar Gabe wrote during the coaching search after Quinn was fired. The big talk was Huggins but Gabe wrote several times about the UAB coach and how the more he researched him, the more he liked him as a potential hire.
Obviously it is hard to make a true comparison of Gates to Mike Anderson (our best overall post Norm hire IMHO), until Gates has coached but after Gabe talked up Gates early in the search, I have been tracking him (and thanks @coonja76) I am actually really really excited by the hire.
FWIW, at the time of their hires, I was not excited about Cuonzo, I didn’t think there was an actual real coach named Frank Haith and I was in disbelief that we hired Kim until the day he was mercifully fired.
