Spotify explains in great detail how they make money and how they pay the labels and artists who provide their content. Pretty compelling explanation here, very transparent, if everything within it is to be believed. They'd have to be pretty ballsy to lay this out there and it's all lies, particularly since they're in the driver's seat right now despite her selfish move a few months ago. I say "selfish" because not every artist is a global megastar. Swift may have personally done better monetarily with her move,* but by pulling all her music she hurts the other artists who rely on total traffic, searches and "suggestions" in Spotify. There's some pretty good info here too about how overall, paid music consumption has been trending downward for quite some time.

Spotify also finally lays waste to the long-standing, false rumor that they pay artist royalties "per stream." That's always been incorrect, but "offended" artists like to use those types of numbers publicly to decry this new streaming phenomenon.

Lastly, Spotify explains their per user (free tier, premium tier & both combined) contribution to the music industry compared to YouTube, Pandora/Slacker Radio and traditional broadcast radio's contributions.

The bottom line is Taylor Swift is an elitist kunt who is having difficulty understanding the changes in the way listeners prefer to consume music. Look at the payout numbers. They are pretty dramatic, particularly for top 10 albums and global star status artists. $1,000,000/year for a "breakthrough Indie album?" Holy crap! And this is just one of many revenue streams for these artists. Plus, Spotify is a great way for lesser known artists to get discovered. All-in-all, I think it's a great value to subscribers, as you all already knew, but it's also good to see they are pumping so much money back into the music industry itself. I guess Taylor Swift she mad because they won't cut her a larger piece of the pie. Her rep, the creepy turd in the picture below, claims they pulled her music "to show respect to the superfan" who actually buys an album. Yeah, this sounds legit. Here's the actual quote: "We never wanted to embarrass a fan," says Scott Borchetta, president of Big Machine Label Group, in a radio interview with Motley Crue's Nikki Sixx, of all people. "If this fan went and purchased the record, CD, iTunes, wherever, and then their friends go, 'why did you pay for it? It's free on Spotify,' we're being completely disrespectful to that superfan." His notion is incorrect. It's NOT free on Spotify, at least not in the sense that the artists aren't compensated. Just fukcing say what it is, you greedy pussies. "WE WANT PEOPLE TO BUY ALBUMS AND NOT LISTEN ONLINE OR ON THE RADIO BECAUSE WE MAKE MORE MONEY WHEN YOU BUY ALBUMS." Yeah, we know. Unfortunately for you, that's not what listeners want. Look at album and iTunes sales worldwide. The declines are stunning. Listeners will always win, and fighting your customers is stupid.
