"Smith, a redshirt junior from St. Charles, Mo., was a second-team AP selection last year, when he led the nation with 14 sacks and 30 tackles for a loss and became the second consensus All-American in NIU history. He has followed up this season with 15 sacks, 24½ tackles for a loss, four forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries for the Mid-American Conference champion Huskies (8-5), earning his second straight MAC Defensive Player of the Year award and the Vern Smith Leadership Award as the conference’s top player."
Talk about losing a diamond.
Girls and boys, we cannot afford losing players like Smith to the MAC. What was the story on his recruiting??? (2015?) I understand at 6'1" DE is a challenge, but he's got an All-Frickin'-American heart and brain in that frame. Chase Daniel was a bit vertically challenged too and he turned out...just okay.
Tigers coaches have to study who is being recruited in the Group of Five conferences, especially from Missourah, the SEC and nearby. We can't sign 'em all, but to lose All-American talent just hurts.
