Mizzou is having a bad year across pretty much the entire AD. Football was a massive disappointment and Sterk fired the coach. Basketball is inexplicably bad right now. Women’s hoops is awful. Wrestling is having its worst season in many years. Volleyball is decent I suppose.

There have been other shakeups that rubbed some the wrong way or simply befuddled many. Rex Sharpe getting essentially demoted, the Kreklows randomly deciding to retire right before the season, etc.

The guy in charge is the guy hiring our next football coach. I’m not sure there’s much reason at all to feel confident about how that will turn out.

Just because Cuonzo isn’t working out doesn’t necessarily mean it was a bad hire. Similar to Quin.

We were all gushing about how masterfully he conducted the search, got Cuonzo and then the Porters. Cuonzo does not seemed to have improved as a coach or recruited as he did at previous schools but that’s not on Sterk.

This is the rational take. Coaching searches are such a crap shoot. A+ hires constantly fizzle out. Awful hires can also work out. Every coaching change is a gamble.

I still think Cuonzo was a good hire at the time. Same with the Odom hire.
Unfortunately, Cuonzo's contract is insane. I'm fine with paying a man, but locking us in the contract like we are currently...

At the risk of sounding contentious, your first sentence is ridiculous. Because it’s not working out absolutely means it wasn’t a good hire. At the time, sure, it was lauded but that doesn’t make it a good hire. It’s on the AD to identify someone who will workout and improve the program. Admittedly, it has improved from ‘piss poor’ to ‘poor’. So I guess he has that going for him so far.

Flat out, this hire has not gone as well as anyone expected with recruiting or on floor results.

In fairness, he probably could have recruited a little better if his team performed a little better on the floor his first two years. That is hard when your best player each season misses the entire season.

That is incredibly difficult to overcome in basketball and would definitely delay a rebuild.

With that said, tonight’s loss is bad regardless. No excuses for it at all.

HCCM needs to start reeling in some Jimmy’s and Joes

His recruiting results of late make me fine with him not filling open scholarships at this point, at least leave the next coach some roster flexibility when Cuonzo is fired next March. Cuonzo and his staff have failed big time recruiting to the point I just want him to stop. We are signing guys who aren’t even playing a minute for us, what the f, that is Kim Anderson level incompetence.

Martin isn't going to be fired for at least two seasons.
Yeah, next March he is gone, no doubt about it. We will see Kim Anderson level performances in conference play this year and since he is guaranteed another year we will have to watch another season of it. Cuonzo will leave the program where he took it over, pathetic.

This. Any one of us as AD would have taken the CM + Porters deal in a f’in heartbeat. I’m interested to see how his football coach hire turns out.

Uh, year 1 was a terrific coaching job considering all of the adversity.

A few better shooters but fouled to much, turned ball over to much and didn't have enough talent. Last year was same thing with less talent and this year same thing with less talent and worse shooters.

No, Martin cannot be fired until at least after next season unless it is for cause and unfortunately that does not include crappy performance.

To be fair, Mizzou Women did bring in a Top 10 recruiting class. The problem with RP is that she doesn't seem to be that great of a coach. Her teams at Mizzou have been very turnover prone, fundamentals of the game are lacking (part of the turnover problem), Offense and defensive scheme is all over the place. She isn't a horrible coach, but needs to find assistants that help with her flaws.
