I keep seeing, "We can't fire a coach that has taken us to two NCAAs in 4 years." While, yes, that is accurate on both accounts. We have been to two NCAAs in 4 years and most schools would be foolish to fire a coach for achieving that.
I really have a hard time giving him at least (full) credit for the first appearance. The Porters were going to come here (after Romar was canned up at UW) with just about any competent coach being hired at Mizzou. Also, with the stipulation dad was hired, which he was.
So the Porters come, he gets Robinson to come because of that and lands Tilly, too. Team had a couple decent pieces already in place to go along with the influx of talent. Almost any coach, outside of Kim Anderson would have gotten that team to the tournament.
Then, two shi!t seasons in the middle, which leads us to this year. Starts off great, ends with a dud. Year 4, and this is what we have. And now, it's gone. X is gone. Tilmon is gone. All of the Smiths are gone. We're fuct. I can understand a dip, especially at a non-blueblood school, like us. But to start from scratch in year 5? Unacceptable.
That's great. He doesn't text and drive. He is a morally fine man. He would be my first choice as a God-Father to my son. But Mizzou is paying him 3 million dollars to win games. He ain't gonna do any better than 20-22 win in his best years. That is most likely with junior and senior laden teams. Which take time to build and mesh. So, a good team and 3-4 years, repeat.
Wonder if the coach at Loyola-Chicago will be available in a couple of years?
