Lots of discussion about student and Greek attendance in "Stadium Atmosphere" thread. I had an advisor meeting today at the sorority house, so I thought I'd poll the audience.

Before the meeting, I asked some of the current members why they didn't go to games. Some said, "I don't really like football." Others said, "I just go to the tailgate and then either watch the game at the bars or somewhere else."

When I asked what they will do when the new rule next year about third-party vendors and security officers at fraternity tailgates goes into effect, they replied, "we'd probably just go to the bars."

However, all of them also said, "the tickets are too expensive." The student ticket package was the first thing we bought our son at Summer Welcome. But he grew up a Tiger fan and we had had season tickets for three years at that point so he'd been attended every game since he was a HS sophomore.

If you're a Mizzou student who didn't grow up in a Mizzou fan family, $240 for the ticket package (football & basketball), is just an extra expense on top of all the required expenses.. Out-of-state students especially don't see spend the money need to attend games.

One of our other advisors is a an Ole Miss graduate. She and her husband both work in student affairs at Mizzou. They've done the research and the Mizzou ticket package is the second highest in the SEC.

When I talked about the group seating, they were intrigued by the possibility of sitting together if it was tied to Homecoming points and if they could sit with their HoCo partners. Not sure what would happen to November games after HoCo when there would be no incentive to attend. Maybe a Director's Cup kind of award for student groups who regularly attend games.

Our philanthropy chair had attended a meeting this week with the athletic department and one representative from each fraternity and sorority to address the lack of attendance. So, at least the AD has asked the question.

Sure is different from the days of dressing up for the games, wearing mum corsages, having brunch at the house, sitting with all your sisters or brothers--and calling for the "mix man" for Coke because your date had a flask in his pocket.
