"Taser, taser, taser...holy shit, I just shot him" trial begins this week

There's a balancing act. I agree that people need to obey orders or face consequences. But when you work in a professional capacity, you must be aware that your clients will not always be reasonable or act in a respectable way. However, we must maintain our cool, act responsibly, and be prepared.

I empathize with the overwhelming stress that law enforcement deal with on a daily basis, but again they are serving all of us and that means there is a certain level of respect, care, and diligence that you have to display when wearing a badge. We live in an imperfect world and not everyone is going to be 'obedient' and be law-abiding. If they were, there would be no need for law enforcement.

This is just an unfortunate incident from all angles and the families of both Ms. Potter and the victim are hurting. It could happen to anyone, but that doesn't mean we don't need to face the consequences.

You just can't simply not know the difference between where you're holding your gun and taser. It's just a mistake that can't be made. That's negligence and sometimes jail is warranted.
So… violently resisting arrest isn’t merely “behaving in a disrespectful way”. It’s literally a mortal threat. The two aren’t comparable.

And maintaining the peace is such a public benefit(indeed, it’s THE most important) that as a society we should be reinforcing that the Badge! deserves respect regardless of the few who wear it who might abuse it’s authority.

And everyone agrees you don’t get to police if you can’t differentiate taser from firearm. But a lengthy prison sentence for an unintentional mistake while in the process of subduing a violent suspect resisting arrest will catalyze similar instances of chaos and anarchy…and get people killed.

She made a mistake. The judge and prosecutor followed the mob. She will likely get the conviction reversed on appeal and should be free on bond.

Hey @V-P , I was told that if the cop would have intended to shoot the guy instead of mistakenly shoot the guy, she would have been legally authorized to since he made a motion to reach for a possible weapon. Is that accurate?

Due to careless handling of a gun she accidentally killed a guy she didn’t mean to. Same thing happened on Jan 6. Pics of cop running around with his finger on the trigger and testimony he gave no warning. Difference was nobody ever questioned the Capitol cop. Got to know your audience when you mistakenly kill someone.

Yeah, but that kind of shit happens to an idiot pawn in a seditious conspiracy.

Kim Potter is being released early from her prison sentence. She'll spend the next 8 months in some sort of supervised home confinement with her family.

Prison really changes a woman, I guess.
