1. If I were the AD at Jacksonville State, I'd fire my football coach. And I'm not sure I'm kidding. Jacksonville State's kids fought their asses off. They outplayed Auburn. They were within two minutes of what might be the biggest upset in the history of college football. And then they went full turtle and lost. Third down and eight, you run the football? I get it. It's not the worst idea in the world because it does waste 50 seconds, but at that point in the game there was quite a bit of time left. Also, you didn't get to where you were by being scared. Then, your punter shanks a 17 yarder (which was the biggest play of the game). But the biggest crime: You get the ball at the 35 (maybe even 40) yard line with 39 seconds left AND YOU TAKE A KNEE? That's just awful. I hope his players were furious. There wasn't a single person who thought JSU was winning that game if it went OT. Not one. Except apparently their head coach. Bully for you for believing in your kids, but if you believe in your kids, then give them a chance to win the damn game. 39 seconds and a timeout is a long time when the clock stops on a first down.
2. That game shows why polls are stupid. Because I bet Auburn will still be ranked tomorrow. It shouldn't be. Just because a bunch of writers thought Auburn was the sixth best team in the country on paper before a game was played doesn't mean we should keep them in the top 25 when they've scraped by an 0-2 team and gotten incredibly lucky to beat an FCS team. On the field, Auburn hasn't been one of the top 25 teams in the country through two weeks. I bet they're still in the top 15 tomorrow.
3. Leonard Fournette is really good at football. I thought Mississippi State would beat LSU at home. Fournette had 159 yards and three touchdowns. I still doubt LSU has a quarterback, because LSU seemingly never has a quarterback, but Fournette is good enough that if the Tigers have a good defense, it won't matter.
4. Tyler Mangum has a flair for the dramatic. He's BYU's backup QB (well he isn't the backup anymore). He beat Nebraska on a hail mary last week, then threw a go ahead touchdown pass on fourth and 7 with 45 seconds left in a win over Boise State last night. If I need a touchdown in the final minute, I think I want that guy as my QB.
5. My favorite tweet of the night relates to a team you guys know I haven't been in love with all offseason:
The Vols actually played really well for about 52 minutes. Had OU down 17-3 and generally dominated. In the end, they blew a 17 point lead at home for the first time in school history and that one's gonna leave a mark. With everything we've heard out of Knoxville, the goal isn't to be able to play with Oklahoma. It's to win. Tennessee had the Sooners where they wanted them and couldn't keep them down (thanks in large part to Sterling Shephard who is one hell of a wide receiver). That loss doesn't hurt Tennessee's chances to win the East, and honestly, I believe the Vols are better this morning than I did yesterday morning. But close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. it doesn't get you squat in college football.
6. Is Michigan State the best combo of football and hoops in the country right now? Kudos to Sparty for exacting revenge and beating Oregon (although if Vernon Adams could have hit a wide open receiver with 30 seconds left, we'd be talking about MSU blowing a ten point lead in the last five minutes). I was thinking about this last night. When you consider football and men's basketball, is there anybody who's better in that combo than MSU? I don't think there is. In fact, I'd say the top three in that combination all currently play in the B1G: Michigan State, Wisconsin and Ohio State. You can put them in any order you want, but I can't think of a school that would unseat any of those three off the top of my head.
7. As far as Oregon goes, I echo Kirk Herbstreit's thoughts on the game broadcast. That loss shouldn't hurt Oregon and keep them out of the playoff. Kudos to you for going on the road and playing a top five team. I wish more teams would do it. College football is better for that game having been played. They gave fans a show. And that's what it's about.
8. Ole Miss vs Georgia Tech, first one to 100 wins. The Rebels have scored 149 points in two games. The Yellow Jackets have scored 134. Neither one of them has played anybody, but the lowest output in any game for one of those teams through two weeks is 65 points. That's a lot of points.
9. Got to think the end is nigh for the Old Ball Coach. Steve Spurrier is one of the best coaches in the history of college football. And what he did at South Carolina, taking a historically bad to mediocre program to three straight 11 win seasons, may be just as impressive as what he did at Florida. But SC is just 8-7 in its last 15 games and lost at home to Kentucky (the Wildcats first SEC road win in five years). Their next three league games are at Georgia, at Mizzou and home for LSU. An 0-4 league start is very much in the cards. At 70 years old, does he really have another rebuild in him? I kind of doubt it.
10. Woo, Pig Slop. For about two years now we've been hearing "This is the best team to go winless in conference play ever," or "This is the best 2-5 team you've seen" or "This is the hottest team in the country currently on a one game winning streak." Maybe this year it's "This is the best team ever to lose to Toledo at home." Listen, the year's not over for Arkansas or anything and the Hogs will still win some games, but that's a loss you just really shouldn't have. And the biggest issue for Arkansas? They're having trouble running the ball. That's the one think Bielema's teams have always done, but with Johnathan Williams out, they're having trouble doing it. Will be interesting to see where Arkansas goes from here.
