A couple of crazy semifinal games last night in San Antonio:

McKinney beat Austin Westlake in double OT. Westlake led by 1 with 1.9 seconds left in regulation, subbed in a kid whose name wasn’t in the scorebook. Technical foul. McKinney made 1 of 2 free throws. Then Westlake was playing for the last shot in a tie game in double OT. Kid made a lazy pass, MicKinney stole it and dunked it with 1 second left. Afterward, the Westlake coach said the scorebook omission is “one of those freak things” that happens in the course of a season. No, Coach. This is on you. Cost your kids a shot to play for a state title.

In the second game, Duncanville, the defending state champ, fell behind 30-10. Got it to 32-19 at the half and held the other team to 4 points in the second half. 4! Finished the game on a 40-6 run. Won by 14.

Richardson High, my alma mater, was the No. 1 public school in the country before it lost to McKinney last week on a crazy, last-second shot. Also handed Duncanville its only loss. Really thought we’d be in San Antonio this weekend, dammit!
