NEW STORY THE CHAMBER: APRIL 12 2024

Guess it's trendy to throw out 0-19 in every thread like that is much worse than 1-18 or 2-17 or 3-16 would have been.
0-19 is significantly much more worse than a 1-18, 2-17, or 3-16.

They didn’t win a conference game. Not. A. Single. One.

And won’t win a conference game in the calendar year of 2024. But here’s to hoping DG lands a backup SG this weekend 👍🏼

We’ve had rosters full of guys that need to be strictly coming off the bench PLENTY of times in the past decade. Forgive people for not getting too excited about landing more 10-15 minute/game type guys from the portal when we have legitimately 4 starting spots up for grabs.

I think this is a fair concern too. Two years ago, he had a bunch of role players who could be role players because they had an alpha in Kobe and a secondary alpha in D'Moi. They didn't have either of those things last year. They had a whole bunch of role players. At some point you want to look and see someone you think is more than "a piece." I don't know who that would be on this roster right now.

They really only had 4 role players last year. Had they had 7 or 8 role players the season wouldn’t have caused the stud that it did.

We get it, it can't be changed and repeating it ad nauseum is boring.
tough shit. Don’t go 0-19 and it won’t be talked about at nauseam.

The same thing happened to Drink. All anyone ever talked about was how he couldn’t do any better than .500. Then this past year happened. Now you want him to be the AD.

So they had four role players and then like eight guys who shouldn't have been on the roster? That's concerning too.
Say they land Porter, Mitchell, Perkins and Warrick for argument sake, who is the “dude”?

Perkins? I don't know for sure. I don't think Bates is the leading scorer on a good team. I think he's a good third guy. I don't think Grill is either. I can't say on Tonje and I'm not going to pretend to have watched much of the guys you're talking about here. I want to be clear, as I said in another thread, I'm not picky about who they get. Their job is to identify them. They just have to do that job correctly.

More like 4 role players. 2 more would have been role players injured. 8 guys that should have been mostly practice players but were forced into trying to be role players. Led to a terrible year.

Kobe was a dude that was developed here. I’m pessimistic that Mizzou is a program that can go get a “dude” in the portal because those guys go to bluebloods. I mean I wouldn’t even consider Cleveland a “dude”.

I don’t even think you need a “dude” to have a decent to good year. Look at South Carolina as an example.

Meechie Johnson was a good player, but I wouldn’t put him in the dude category.

I think that’s the plan with the roster that I suggested

They had quality at all 5 spots. Mizzou might be able to pull that off over the next 5-6 weeks.

Right. Maybe the Northern Kentucky kid becomes a dude. Hell, maybe Bates does. It doesn't have to be a guy you immediately ID out of the portal as a guy that's gonna get 18 a game. They just have to have one, which is why I've said I'm not going to nitpick who they take. They have to be right. Same thing I said about Drink and QB over and over before last year. I didn't care who his QB was, he just had to get the right one. And he did.

I don't know how many are writing them off. The concern is pretty simple: Missouri was historically bad last year. And there are some concerns that the staff is bringing back a lot of people off that roster and adding freshmen who, as you said, are a crapshoot. By no means is it time to panic, but I do understand why some are concerned right now. Those concerns may all be alleviated in the next six weeks, but it hasn''t happened yet
You can’t say that Gabe. People will get upset

Have a feeling Mizzou is going to have to overpay significantly on some of these bball guys based on the season they had last year.

I think Perkins is the best bet right now. All-B1G 2nd team I believe, which Kobe was All-SEC 2nd team the year before Gates got the job.

But it could also be Mark Mitchell if you land him. He has extremely high potential. More than even Kobe.

Crews scored a lot at UT-Martin, but I think he's more along the lines of what Gholston was Year 1.

But I wouldn't count out Warrick. In scoring, he went 15.8 (FR), 16.8, 18.8, 19.9. He's not like Tonje, who broke out his senior year. Warrick has been an effective and efficient scorer since he got on NKU's campus. 49.4% 2P FG, 35% 3P FG, 84% FT on 4 FTA/G. The dude gets buckets. Will it translate to the SEC? I don't know. But I wouldn't be surprised if he was our leading scorer next year.

I'm glad someone said this. Also, this is what little is left from what we love about college sports. These guys are here (for the time being) playing for our team which they chose first. They're gonna bust their asses this offseason and the most exciting thing possible would be to see them both look a lot better next year. I would rather that be the case than replace them with someone who is marginally better.
If we keep them that means bringing in two less transfers. Rolling out the same exact dudes who just went 0-19 seems like a good way to get fired.

once again a remarkable oversimplification. and pushing out sophomores for not contributing as freshmen is a sad look for future recruiting.
You have to push out somebody. You can’t have 17 guys on the roster. Some will leave. Just accept it.

as of now, I think so. But we'll see.

I know you really don’t like pushing specific kids out and saying who you think is leaving, but I’m getting confused who might even go:

Bates - told Drew in fairly certain terms he’d be back

Grill & Tonje - your intel has been fairly consistent both are back

3 fresh - as of now, back

That leaves just Shaw, who as of now hasn’t hit the portal

Shaw was in Sedalia yesterday as part of the offseason caravan. I kind of doubt he’s part of that if both sides weren’t confident that he would return.

I guess where I’m at is

1. Gabe’s intel is off on incoming, but to me that doesn’t seem likely as we are hosting Warrick, he remains positive on Jevon and none of them or Crews address the biggest needs (PG & C)

2. His intel on outgoings is off and/or the staff is playing it incredibly close to the vest on the 2-4 more outgoings we need to utilmately land us in the 13-15 range

3. We are going to have the largest roster in D1 lol

Well it's definitely not #3.

It's not really intended as intel, it's just that none of them have left yet, so until they do I am operating as if they are staying. I think another 1-3 almost have to leave, but IDK who or when. I'm surprised there haven't been more already

This will be the only time I reply to you here because I know where you stand on this and don’t need to derail this thread.

My question is why do you take we are adding 4 more transfers as gospel (as Gabe has indicated is likely the case) but basically ignored all the folks Gabe has indicated he thinks could be back?

At minimum seems, Bates, Grill, Tonje and Ant could be back. And as he’s said now maybe both other freshman and as folks have pointed to Shaw is out doing the caravan stuff

I’d agree that 1-3 ultimately leave and it’s also surprising that more haven’t left yet. The staff really seems to be actively recruiting a lot of spots and so even 3 out, 4 in puts us at 14.

I think we're definitely trying to add 5 transfers. We're going after Perkins and Warrick and probably Porter and Mitchell and Reed and we already took Crews. It's pretty evident we'd like to add 5 guys total. It could be that Gates fails to get those guys and decides the guys he already has are better than what he could get in the portal.

I think if Gates gets who he wants to get then guys will leave because they got recruited over and won't get playing time. If Gates fails to get the guys he wants in the portal he may only end up taking 3 or 4 from the portal instead of 5 and then less guys will leave.

It seems like the guys on the roster are taking a wait and see approach right now. They'll leave if they get recruited over and they won't if they don't.

We don't know that. We can't say "definitely" about anything
OK, how about it's very, very unlikely we take 5 transfers and nobody leaves. You yourself just said 1 to 3 guys "almost have to leave".

This is exactly what I was going to post. We are going to try to find 4-5 upgrades. If we sign a couple big names, then players may elect to hit the portal. If we don't get those upgrades, Gates will roll with people he can get and see if he can get the most out of those that end up staying.

When we talk about historically bad, perhaps we should be aware of Vanatta's years here? Or even Kim's?

Guess it's trendy to throw out 0-19 in every thread like that is much worse than 1-18 or 2-17 or 3-16 would have been.

Jeez it gets so old and all the handwringing and consternation on this board isn't going to change one dang thing for next year.

Mizzou’s KenPom rankings the last 10 years.

Kim Anderson
192
159
156
Cuonzo Martin
40
68
97
47
137
Dennis Gates

I definitely haven't missed the sunshine pumpers from the Kim and Odom years, but looks like they're back in full force now.
