Before we get to specific kids, a couple of things that have been posted here, but bear repeating for any who may have missed them:
*The recruiting dead period for the NCAA Division I and II now extends through May 31. That means no visits, official or unofficial, no off-campus recruiting, no in-person contact until at least June 1. You would think that will slow the commitments across the country that you would normally see this time of year.
*Jim Sterk told us yesterday there was a vote planned yesterday to extend the SEC ban on events to the same general time frame. We haven't yet seen results of that vote, but it would be shocking if it weren't extended. At this point, June 1 seems like about the most optimistic timetable for anything to even start back on the path to normal.
*Missouri has fulfilled the vast majority of its recruiting restrictions from the NCAA penalty already. I'm not sure how they did it, but they apparently have already gotten through the seven weeks of no visits and no off-campus recruiting. There are a couple of weeks left where phone calls are going to be limited or eliminated, but honestly, that's not really that big a deal. Mizzou still has to play next season with 81 scholarship players rather than 85, but pretty much everything else is over and done with. So that ceases being a topic of conversation going forward. Whatever happens with this class, the restrictions are over and won't really impact it all that much.
MIZZOU AMONG TOP GROUP FOR WR TARGET
***On Tuesday, East St. Louis wideout Keontez Lewis announced his Top 10 schools that included Ole Miss, South Carolina, Tennessee, Nebraska, Illinois, Mississippi State, Kentucky, Oregon, Texas A&M, and Missouri. The three-star prospect was part of East St. Louis group that visited Columbia back in January for a junior day. That group also included current Missouri quarterback commit Tyler Macon and wide receiver target Dominic Lovett. Can the Tigers' land the big three? They are certainly on the right path.
NEW JUCO TARGET
***The Tigers' extended a new JUCO offer to defensive tackle Isaiah Coe out of Iowa Western C.C. Arkansas and Ole Miss are other SEC offers on Coe's resume along with Houston, UCF, Memphis, and Liberty. He joins Independence C.C. (Ks.) tight end Quentin Moore as the other current JUCO targets for Missouri in the 2021 class. Coe will be a December graduate.
RUNNING BACK TARGET NOTES
***One of Missouri's top running back targets, La'Vell Wright, continues to rack up new offers. Northwestern, Wake Forest, and Duke are the latest programs to enter the mix for the three-star prospect, who visited Missouri's campus before the current recruiting dead period due to COVID-19. The Tigers currently set well with Wright, who appears to be their top guy, but it will be interesting to see what other schools get involved throughout the spring.
***Kamarro Edmonds recently released his Top 8 last month which saw Missouri being among that group that also included Louisville, Wake Forest, NC State, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia Tech, and Tennessee. Edmonds recently told TarHeelIllustrated.com that "North Carolina, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, and Louisville" were the schools recruiting him the hardest. LSU is also a new school that just entered the fold, extending an offer back on March 24th. Georgia is showing interest as well.
***Pope John Paul II (Tenn.) prospect Antwan Roberts is another running back target to keep an eye on. The three-star prospect held an offer from the previous staff and told us that he's been communicating with linebackers coach D.J. Smith and the new staff is wanting him to visit whenever the NCAA deems it safe for on-campus visits to reconvene. Wisconsin, Vanderbilt, Duke, Louisville, and Memphis are the other schools recruiting him the hardest right now.
Missouri will likely take just one running back in this recruiting cycle.
NEW PREFERRED WALK-ON COMMIT
***On Thursday night Benton (Ark.) wide receiver Jaden Nash announced his commitment to the Tigers. The Arkansas product picked up his preferred walk-on offer from Missouri back in January and has been in contact with running backs coach Curtis Luper throughout the process.
Here is what Nash had to say about Missouri:
"They have a dynamic offense that I would enjoy. The school is stellar academically as well. (Coach Luper) is energetic, optimistic, and honest. He's someone that will encourage competition everyday. I like those qualities because it levels the playing field, which makes you better and improves the team. Honestly, he and I share the same mindset which is really what stood out to me."
2022 NEWS AND NOTES
***Rivals.com analyst Josh Helmholdt caught up with four-star WR Tyler Morris earlier this week. The Chicagoland product had a visit to Missouri scheduled, but eventually got cancelled due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Here is what Morris had to say about the Tigers:
“I was supposed to go to Missouri that weekend right after they canceled (visits),” Morris said. “That was going to be my first time down there. It was my first SEC offer, and I haven’t really checked anything out besides the Big Ten and Notre Dame. I just want to get a feel for the different conferences.
“Talking to (Eliah Drinkwitz) a little bit, it seems he’s trying to make a change in that program and build it up to how it used to be.”
***Missouri also dished out an offer to Southlake (Tex.) Carroll quarterback Quinn Ewers, the talented signal-caller that already boasts offers from the likes of Ohio State, Oklahoma, Michigan, Florida, Auburn, Baylor, and others. Ewers is a newly-minted four-star prospect in this week's 2022 recruiting rankings release.
***The Tigers also offered another talented 2022 quarterback in Jacurri Brown out of Lowndes (Ga.), the dual-threat talent has other notable offers from Auburn, Kentucky, Ole Miss, Virginia, Virginia Tech, and others.
***The initial 2022 rankings were released this week, which featured two highly-touted St. Louis prospects in Luther Burden and Kevin Coleman. Burden entered the rankings as a 6.1, 5-star prospect while Coleman is slotted as a high-level 6.0, 4-star. Both will be top priorities for the Missouri coaching staff and many other top programs moving forward. For more, click here: Rivals Top 100 for 2022.
