What exactly are we as a team? With Lock at the helm we were looked at as a dangerous passing team that really like to use tempo. With KB at the helm, I'm left wondering what kind of team we actually have. We aren't great at throwing the ball and we seem to abandon the running game at our first chance.
I thought with KB on board we would become a dangerous running team. While we were still winning games I stated a few times that we need more Cowbell and that Rountree = Cowbell. I still believe that. Running is an attitude and it needs to be established. I think we should be running the ball at about a 65 to 35 split. Then when we decide to throw the ball it is off of play action fakes with the safties sucked up to the LOS. I re-watched the Vandy game (I know right), and we had a first and 10 at Vandy's 20 yard line twice. Neither RB touched the ball at all and both times we ended up with no points.
If we consistently run the ball, those 3 or 4 yard carries in the first half will become 5 to 7 yard carries in the second half. We have a monster back that we seem to refuse to use to wear out defenses. If all we did was try and run the ball for the most part, we would have won the last two games IMO. Also, DD needs to get more creative calling plays. If the other team is flying to the ball, how about a reverse. There was a time a couple of games ago where I was screaming for a reverse. DD finally ran one and it went for a huge game. Also, we need KB to be way better at the read option. He seems to keep it when he should hand it off and vice versa.
Our passing game. What can I say, it sucks. KB is afraid to throw the ball. In the Vandy game there was a pass play where the deep in route was wide open and he was looking right at it. It was single coverage with the defender a good 5 yards off the ball behind the receiver. I think KB ended up running the ball for no gain. Not only was that deep in route open he also had Badie in the flat that would have gained at least 5 yards. When KB actually throws the ball our receivers are dropping the ball. In crunch time during the Vandy game, KB hit AO for what would have been a first down. He dropped it, we punted. Vandy on the next series hits Pinkney for a first down and they go on to score the winning TD.
Anyway, this is my 2 cents worth. We have two huge games coming up and I think we can run the ball on both Georgia and Florida. We need to stick with it though and throw in a few creative plays. Also when going deep, our receivers need to lean to the inside and give KB some room on the outside to drop the ball in. Our last two losses are on the offense and play calling IMO.
