It's no damn fun with a game like Saturday's, but I always try to get through a 2nd viewing. Generally, things are never as good or bad as they looked the first time through. Some things that were clarified for me:
Alex Ofodile cost us 10 yards, not a TD. While Oliver's momentum took him into a needless block in the back, Ofodile's block is what sprung Knox.
I was inclined to put a lot of the blame on Dooley, but our O-line was mauled in the 2nd half, and Josh Allen in particular terrorized us. Lock was not quick to get rid of the ball on his sacks, but on 2nd watch, he didn't hold the ball crazy long either. Terrible protection. Beyond the sacks, a false start was just enough yardage to kill another drive.
When a drive starts with Castillo tackling their nose guard, against a terrific D, your coordinator's behind the 8-ball. We did get 19 yards in two plays after, ran on third and one and got nothing. I think the following drive, we ran three times, including third and short and got nothing. We started a late drive inside our 5, ran three times, including third and short and got nothing. So rolling Lock out with a pass/run option on the infamous third and two doesn't seem so insane given the context.
There was talk about Johnson “trying to do too much” instead of getting the first down on his late reception. I didn't see it that way; a defender was perfectly positioned to stop him. The first down we left on the field was an earlier Knox reception where he had blockers set up for a nice seem down the sideline. Inexplicably, he cut towards midfield in front of a blocker right into a tackle. I think Knox is going to be great, but he's going to look the freshman at times.
KC fans are spoiled watching Mahomes run all over the field and throw a laser beam into an 18-inch target space. I'm afraid Lock's accuracy is more like a 48-inch target space, especially under any duress. Hall is great at adjusting and turning that accuracy level into touchdowns. Our other receivers? Not so much.
PM nation is out to fire Hill too. But he didn't punt a 70-yard line drive that broke down EVERYTHING you're trying to do in coverage, and he didn't let a guy go unblocked in the middle of the line on the field goal attempt.
Lastly, we haven't seen much talk about Stoops stooooopidity. Both our scoring drives came from his terrible decisions to go for it on 4th down. And frankly, it took some seriously dumb penalties on the KY defense to sustain those drives.
Getting more than your share of the blame (and credit for success) goes hand-in-hand with coaching and playing QB, but as usual there's plenty of blame to be shared.
