Dave Matter was saying on his podcast this week that because Barry was paid so little and the AD is in a budget crunch Barry may survive a 6-6 season. I was assured from someone extremely well connected at the end of last year that would not happen and that 7-5 likely doesn’t bring him back either. Now I have not talked to this person since. Dave usually knows what he is talking about.
Never f’ing ever should there be a SEC team that hangs onto a bad coach with a low buyout because you will need to pay a good coach more. If we are going to do that let’s just close up shop and move the basketball team to the Big East or A10. The yearly coaches salary article came out this week. To attract a high level coach it will probably cost $4-$5 million a year. The steps should be this.
Raise enough money to make Bob Stoops think hard before telling you no. He probably will. Then there are at least three good coaches at jobs that no one would say are better than the Mizzou job. These guys came to mind instantly there are probably more. Jeff Brohm, Mike Leach, and Matt Campbell. The Leach and Campbell make $3.5 and Brohm $3.8. So if we buck up and offer $4.5-$5 a year we could go out and get a good coach. If we have a coach who can get back to averaging 8 Wins a year like Pinkel did attendance will get back up into the 60,000’s instead of the low 50’s. So eventually the they will pay for themselves but we as fans need to step up and contribute to raise the kind of cash that is needed to lure in a top notch coach.
