Evaluating what you have on a roster seems kind of important.
Recruiting and keeping good players now isn’t on Gates?Guy got injured a chose to leave. Not sure how that's on Gates. It's like Baker/@Lovett in football. Coaches can't keep everyone even if they want to. This a Grill proves Gates assembled a team that could compete last year injuries caught them.
Your telling me Gates doesn’t play anyone 29 mpgTonje would never get the kind of minutes in this system he is getting at Whisky or got at CSU. I assume once he realized this he bailed b/c he wanted to put up numbers and be the showcase player. He would have been a nice piece last year where he could have gotten featured due to everyone sucking and others being hurt. This year would have been tough for him to show out like he is.
yes, better to score 8 ppg on a crap team than 25 ppg somewhere else..like this team is chock full of scoring machinesTonje would never get the kind of minutes in this system he is getting at Whisky or got at CSU. against arizona no less, i know ariz is no miss valley st, but dangNothing to do with Mizzou/Gates, but Tonje scored 41 points on just 14 FGA. That is impressive. 21/22 from the line.
tonje cant play for gates, last night he had ONE steal..how weakYour telling me Gates doesn’t play anyone 29 mpg
Quaintance, you never know, could be on the Gates radar.Coaching philosophies are very different. In their last game vs. Pacific who we play tomorrow, Coach Cal played exactly 7 players the entire game. Travon Brazile was not one of them. TB has been getting 18 minute a game, so not sure if he is hurt this was just a dnp coaches decision. The pigs probably have much better talent than us across the board, but even in their non-con tune up game Cal does not go deep into his bench. I would think some players love that others, not so much.
Also - of interest to some. Jayden Quaintance is averaging 7 Boards, 3.5 blocks and 7 ppg and 2.5 dimes for ASU. Would have been a very nice add to be sure. Jordan Butler is beyond struggling for USC this year. 4 games played and only 1 bucket made, very few blocks, boards, dimes. Ironically his one shot made was a three ball. I do not think this surprises anyone.
I don't get the point--he could have played for Gates and obviously he was a lot better than a lot of posters thought when they ridiculed anyone who said if Tonje and Grill weren't hurt we would have been a lot better. Lots of things go into whether you can keep players or not year to year.tonje cant play for gates, last night he had ONE steal..how weak

This is such a terrible, terrible take in general and especially given the good things happening this season. Out of character for you man.Recruiting and keeping good players now isn’t on Gates?
Man what a cushy multi-million dollar job.
And he gets to play for a bottom dweller in a down Big 12. I think Gray's a better fit on this year's team anyway, but next year maybe. Also - of interest to some. Jayden Quaintance is averaging 7 Boards, 3.5 blocks and 7 ppg and 2.5 dimes for ASU. Would have been a very nice add to be sure.
JQ is not a back to the basket player. So the Josh comparison is not fair. He is more of a Trent Pierce type of player or even MMAnd he gets to play for a bottom dweller in a down Big 12. I think Gray's a better fit on this year's team anyway, but next year maybe.
The only problem is if the legal settlement gets approved in April, NIL as we know it today (pay for play) will be gone and we go to revenue sharing. Under that model only about 20% goes to Men's basketball so your NIL becomes capped as it does Football and only real NIL deals get approved--so going to change the deal quite a bit--can't just outbid people under new model, but I think both Drink and Gates will do well if the new model gets approved.JQ is not a back to the basket player. Rumor is Bobby Hurley may be about to get fired. Now that JQs dad has seen what Coach Cal, Hurley and Coach Gates have done with their programs this might give us a shot if he hits the portal. You have to think Gates is the front runner for CoTY. As Mizzouman wrote last spring, we could have gotten him but the price was too high. I can only assume the price will be even higher in year 2 given his performance on the court/ We will not have NIL money going to Bates, Quez, Perkins, Grill and possibly MM if Mark opts to go pro, which I am not sure he will but who knows. We are freeing up some cap room for sure. Also - I would think with this FF run we are about to go, fundraising for NIL/Mizzou hoops will be at an all time high. This is a staff and program you cannot help but be impressed by.
I just don't want to think about that. 😆If we were able to hold on to John Tonje, whose minutes does he get?
