I ran across this photo of Bill Russell high jumping over Johnny Mathis. Russell was the top Bay Area high jumper out of Oakland’s McClymond’s High School. Mathis at a diminutive 5’7” was the 2nd best out of George Washington HS. Russell went on to basketball game at USF and Mathis running track at SF State. Russell obviously ended up the most decorated NBA player and Mathis passed on the 56 Olympic Trials for a recording session.
