This take is literally all over the place, and it's been repeated by a lot of folks in the media. The more I see it, the more I realize how many people who follow sports don't actually understand how elite competitors work. It's a massively romantic view based on sports movies with moving half-time speeches.
If Georgia is only just now finding its motivation, they will get blown out. Simple as that.
Anybody who has been in a high level competition knows that it's not just about showing up on game day. Whether you're talking about P5 football or medical boards, when you reach a high enough level of competition, natural talent stops mattering. You can't just show up with a pissed off attitude on game day and expect anything other than embarrassment. You show up every day and work your ass off for six months with ZERO gratification. By the time the moment comes around, you've sacrificed so much time and energy that you are practically frothing at the mouth. It has consumed literally every moment of your life; it is nearly impossible for anyone to prep like this and not care. What you hope is that the person across from you had cared less and prepped less.
Look at how many of our players have made complete turnarounds since last season: cook, tollison, Schrader, Luther, Johnny Walker, mookie, Theo, Carnell, all of these freshmen. They are dominating teams that they only barely beat last year with practically the same roster. You don't make those strides by just showing up on Monday of game week. By now it should be pretty obvious that this team took its offseason preparation pretty ****ing seriously. And if that's the case, which game do any of us think those players had circled on the schedule....
Sure, Georgia may feel disrespected at being #2. Maybe they hit game film on Missouri really hard today, maybe they're really pissed and want to punch us in the mouth. Great.
There is no way on this planet that they wanted it more than Mizzou 8 months ago, when it actually mattered.
