Up until about a day ago, I was under the impression our leadership was very good.

I live out of state but from afar all I had heard was good things about Choi, Cartwright and even Sterk.

It was pretty unanimous on here people thought Sterk did a good job with the Cuonzo hire, then he was praised for emphatically and quickly defending Mizzou during the NCAA stuff. Whereas Alden might have been softer.

Non- athletics wise, there seems to be a lot of good news about enrollment, retention rates, student recruitment, etc. I thought Choi and Cartwright were well liked and well respected.

Now all of a sudden they’re all terrible and incompetent?

Are people just overreacting due to the search debacle?

Or was I off base about leadership? (Sterk aside, because I think we can all agree he doesn’t look great right now)

Long post, but an honest question.

The leadership is fine. Odom was a cancer in the AD, and driving away a lot of the people who began his tenure loyal to him. And those who were wary from the beginning, just became incensed.

The long and short of the coaching search is two-fold. And they're an exemplification of why it still doesn't fit in the SEC:

1. Mizzou is cheap. It'll settle for less to save a buck.
2. Mizzou values culture over winning. It would rather hire somebody who fits the wholesome personality it wants to portray but only has mediocre results, over an outright winner with a questionable background.

The search committee didn't leak. The BOC didn't leak. Rank in file leaked-ish.

Over reacting? Surely you jest

Or someone with an ax to grind

You live out of state. Makes sense you have no idea what’s going on and how well things are going outside of Odom pressing the throttle full speed ahead ramming our program into the ground

Overreacting on PM? No way.

Rolls eyes.

Does my post make any sense, then?

Interesting if true.... Points 1&2 are spot on. Until Mizzou ponies up and learns to live in the gray area, mediocrity will always be the ceiling.

The positive NOI from hiring a solid winning coach is indisputable which makes me question all of them to begin with.

Overreact? Lol. That never happens here. Unless you have been hiding under a rock or just joined PM yesterday you know there are multiple premature ejaculations on here every single day. In all seriousness though I was thinking the same thing and I live in state.

Mizzou has always been a pretty mediocre state university—with a few notable exceptions. Devine and GP eras in football. Stewart era in basketball. Academically, the Carnahan era was good because he valued education and the state was swimming in money. Other than those examples, lots of mediocrity. This stems from the fact that Missouri is a mediocre state.

Sorry to be negative. I just think people are getting overly upset because they’ve been kidding themselves that Mizzou is better than it is. We like to think of ourselves like we’re Florida, but we’re really a whole lot more like Mississippi State.

Wow. That was perfectly said.

Obviously I know people are going to overreact about the coaching search. I guess my question is more specific to Choi and Cartwright.

Are they unfairly getting lumped into this umbrella of incompetence with the AD? Or is there reason to doubt their abilities as well? I was under the impression they were great.

They are not great. Lower end of competent, in my opinion. But that’s as good as we’re going to do right now. Mizzou is a mess from top to bottom. PR issues, money issues, leadership issues, mediocre faculty that thinks it’s Ivey League quality...

That is disappointing then. Guess I had my head in the sand because up until yesterday I thought this was a “new era” of Mizzou with smart, competent leadership that was putting the dysfunction behind us.

They are better than the people they replaced. Baby steps...
