Looking at the stats, A&M looks to be a prime opportunity to come out in the zone that Gates has used more and more as of late.
A&M is a driving team. They get to the line a lot. Their FTA / FGA is 46.8, which is 5th in the nation. They take a lot of free throws. In fact, their percentage of points from the free throw line is 25.2, which is 2nd in the nation.
Conversely, they don’t shoot it well from three. They shoot 31% from behind the arc, which is 294th in the nation. Only 24.7% of their points come from behind the line. Compare that to Mizzou, who scores 33.5% of their points behind the arc.
This seems like a prime opportunity to come out in zone and force A&M to beat them over the top. Don’t let them get the lane. Don’t let them get to the line. And then just hope you can limit the damage on the glass.
They are an elite offensive rebounding team. 19th in the country to be exact. I’m sure they will get theirs on the glass. It’s tough to rebound out of a zone. But I still think zone is the most effective way to defend this team in the half-court.
