Solid start with a 3-under 67. He’s T-15. Would’ve been even better if not for a couple of missed 5-foot birdie putts on the two par-5s. But he did hole a couple of longer putts for birdie.
It’s a bunched leaderboard. There are 10 players tied for 5th, at 4 under. Buckley is one of 19 players at 3 under. 19! (Spieth leads at 7 under).
Based on his standing, he’s projected to move from 56th to 53rd. But this is how bunched it is. Aaron Rai came in at 65th, shot 4 under and is projected to move to 50th. Cam Davis shot 4 under and is projected to move up 14 spots, to 48th. Which is another way of saying that if Buckley had made just one of those 5-footers, he’d be projected well inside the top 50. In fact, he’d be projected 34th with the 316 points Rai and Davis are getting.
Long way to go, but it’s a helluva score for a guy who’s been off for 6-7 weeks and is coming off a significant injury. Now he needs to follow it up. Hoping he kicked some rust off today and can go even lower on Friday.
