I know Vanover was mediocre here last year but some of that I blame on coaching. I kept seeing him trying to guard much quicker players close the 3 point line with predictably terrible results. When he stayed in the post he was significantly more effective getting rebounds and playing defense. At the very, very end of the season it appears Gates decided to keep him closer to the basket and Vanover played better against UGA and Florida.
Hopefully Gates has learned the lesson and doesn’t ask Marshall and, to some degree Gray, to guard the periphery. Just my 2 cents.
