First let me say that I do not think this will happen. I am still hopeful, although it becomes harder every day, that he turns it around. But a thought that just occurred to me if we need to move on because it spirals out of control and he can’t land any decent players. There may be a solution.
Everyone is saying you can’t really fire Zo until after the 21-22 season because of the May 1st no termination date. Does it say anywhere in the contract that we can’t hire another coach though? The coaching carousel is in March and maybe extends into April depending on who leaves for better jobs after tournament runs. Say we finish this year with 11 wins and next year is not better. What is to stop Mizzou from hiring a replacement in March and just paying two coaches for two months? I know you are only allowed to have so many coaches. Not sure on the language of Zo’s contract if he has final authority on assistants. If he doesn’t you just hire the guy as an assistant so he can start recruiting. If Zo does have final authority you just hire him to a general AD role, tell him to pick one guy currently in the staff to stay on and have that guy be out recruiting telling kids who the new coach is going to be.
Hopefully the fact that people were talking about firing Zo seems insane at this time next year, but if we are in the same spot you need to have options. We will then be at a decade long span with only one NCAA appearance that you got bounced in the first round as a 9 seed. There won’t be any fans to try to win back.
