After the disastrous Chuck Fairbanks experiment, CU hired assistant coach Bill McCartney prior to the 1982 season. He had no head coaching experience. His first year he went 2-8-1. He then went:
4-7 (1983)
1-10 (1984 -- his 3rd season) After losing to a bad Kansas State team 38-6 to end the season, wide receiver Loy Alexander said: "We've got big problems here, and they go from the coaching staff on down," who then slammed the team's practice schedule, game planning and organization.
7-5 (1985)
6-6 (1986)
7-4 (1987)
before finally starting to win big. He ended up as the most successful CU football coach in its history.

Mike MacIntyre was hired following a 1-11 season in 2012. He had previously been the head coach at San Jose State, hardly a football powerhouse. He went 4-8 his first year. He then went:
2-10 (2014, with the 2 wins over Hawaii and Massachusetts)
4-8 (2015)
He's currently 6-2 with his only losses to Michigan and USC on the road. Patience was a virtue twice at CU.

I'm not claiming Barry Odom will replicate either McCartney or MacIntyre. Both had been assistant coaches longer than Odom was.

I am claiming it's awfully early to be proclaiming him a failure or a bad hire.
