Thought I'd put a thread here to keep from distracting from the Baseball means more thread on the Lair.

@Otis Blake good luck with the puppy pick today. Let us know which one you go with. Is it a hunting dog or do you just love labs?

@rubyreds111 Sorry to hear about you losing both of your dogs this year. That's got to be really tough. I lost one of mine about 18 months ago after a year long battle with congestive heart failure. Never an easy thing when you consider them a member of the family.

What makes you a heeler fan? Are you looking for a high energy dog? Outdoor or indoor dog? Working dog?

I'm a big dog fan. I like REALLY big dogs, because they don't require a lot of exercise. If the weather is crappy and I don't want to spend a lot of time outside with my dogs, they don't care because they are just big couch potatoes.

This is from a year ago. The one on the left is a 9 year old french mastiff, and the other 2 are Boerboels (South African mastiffs).

This one show the puppy at about 8 months.

And one year (about 135 pounds)

I couldn't ask for better behaved pups. They're great with kids too.

@Vladi Putin @Hound Dog32 Rhodesians are great dogs too. Is your's really high energy? The ones that I've met just need to run and run and run and run. I'm a little lazy, so I don't have the energy for that.

I just give mine a basic daily walk (nothing crazy), and apparently I’m his hero, cmeier. He does have “play” in his genes, but nothing over the top at all. Just right.

No lions around here to hunt, so he‘ll play some fetch and he loves to jump around (hurdle over stuff) on his way back — fun to watch. Then he’s done and back to lounging around, and watching me go out of my mind watching MIZZOU games.

Nice thread, @cmeier76. I’ll be that stick in the mud and encourage people to adopt don’t shop. My two permanent ones are:

Mo (the black miniature pinscher mix)

Lucy (per the DNA test, treeing walker coonhound mixed with a Great Dane/mastiff):

Past fosters who have since been adopted, most of whom were pulled right before time was up at Dallas Animal Services. Just trying to show that awesome dogs can be had while saving a life.

I have had 3 blue heelers. 2 of the 3 had seizures. The first one would have them maybe once every 3 or 6 months. My 2nd one was the best dog. It will be 2 years in July I put him down. He was 12. He got where he would drag his hind foot on the ground. It had bleeding sores. I would bandage them every night and put a splint to keep him dragging. He could get up on his own, walk, do his business, and loved to still go out on the 4 wheeler. One day he couldn't get up. I picked him up and he couldn't stand. He just laid down with a look that I knew it was time. The 3rd blue heeler also had seizures. They are very smart dogs. Great companions. They like to run and play. But knew when it was time to do their thing with cattle. They were trained with commands. We got them as puppies so they grew up with cats. They get exercise every day. All my dogs were house trained. When I had to put Zack down, everyone who knew him loved him. I wasn't the only one who cried over that loss.
My Vizsla was dumped out here as a pup. He was a bigger dog. He was more protective. If he knew you, you were fine. If he didn't, you didn't walk up on him. Once he got use to you he would come to you. Then you could pet him. Once that happened he would remember and you didn't have problems ever again. He had a huge bark. If you walked into the house or showed up with him outside, there was no mistaking he was big.
I want a puppy border collie. They are very smart also. The second one I just want a bigger dog. Doesn't matter what kind or if full blood. The reason I want pups is so they can be raised around cats. They must get along with cats. To house train. I take my dogs with me to a lot of places. All my dogs before loved to go.

I’m picturing a border pup trying to herd your cats. [laughing]Great dogs but a lot of work. But the payoff is tremendous if well trained.

I think that pup would be in for a rude awaking from my cats. :) It is just when he would get bigger. Haven't found a cattle dog yet that isn't hard work to train. Had a border collie once. Was a smart dog. Didn't know he was afraid of thunder and lightening that he took off. Never found him.. Had Australian Shepherd. Good smart dog but didn't want a thing to do with cattle. Going to try a border collie again.

My mom had a corgi that would herd anything he was around, including cats. Never was trained, just instinct. Great little dog

If you have a cat problem, my Lucy would be happy to take care of it for you. That dog’ll hunt.

I’m assuming you have barners?

Standard poodle. Smartest dog of all. Where do you think all the doodles come from?

Have had three. All great dogs. No shedding

Note. This breed was originally a retriever. Web toes

My dogs and cats have to get along. If not, they won't be here. That's why I am leaning to puppies. Never had a problem before.

Cats can be a great asset around the farm and home

I know my Grandparents had some cats around their farm back in the day, n.w.mo.tiger. I'd see the cats hanging out mostly around the barn and you could never get close enough to pet them, and I never saw them venture near the house, where the dogs hung out.

What I NEVER noticed were any rats/mice or other small critters around. Old school wisdom and the law of the jungle right there.

Like a couple of you guys I’ve lost two great dogs over the past year and half or so. The first 2 are Duchess and the last photo is Dixie (adopted and named shortly after the move to the SEC was announced.)
My first German Shorthair I got strictly for hunting quail/pheasant, but quickly found out they’re even better companions. While hard-headed and frustrating at times, they’re so eager to please smart, loving and quirky.

Edit: Obviously I’m a dipshit that can’t upload photos for whatever reason.

One of my favorite threads. Love dogs. When my kids were young I had a small farm...had Australian Shepherds. Loved those dogs. Great pets and very smart. Ran on the farm.
Now live in town..no kids...have an English Bulldog. As I type...he and I are in my basement watching basketball and he is snoring on my lap.

I love my Bulldog...but would never advise anyone to own one. High maintenance medically...low maintenance as a pet. He and I have the same energy level. He is 10...old for a Bulldog...but he is in great shape as his food costs more than mine and he only eats dog food. Otherwise they get really fat and unhealthy.

Had never heard of the Rhodesian Ridgeback...beautiful dogs. Ship has probably sailed with me....but if I were going to get another dog...I think that would be my choice.

This is my last dog. He is my best friend...and I am his.

Can't do cats....I'm Hank Hill when it comes to cats.

My cats are not really by choice. Strays that people dump. When you have a cat that is so starved that it is sharing a meal with bull, that is a hungry cat. I have no mice in house, garage, or barn. So they do serve a purpose.

Rescue only.

NO! Get a pure bred dog so you know how he was raised and where he's from. You dont want a dog with horrible genetics, thats not registered or recognized by the AKC. Second city, why dont you quit spreading mutts and genetic disorders around in the dog population for once?

It is not just mutts spreading disorders. There is a lot of breeders doing the same. 2 of the 3 Blue heelers were AKC animals. They had seizures. Why pay 5k for a dog? I have seen both sides. You are no more right or wrong than anyone else.

I’m sure you empathize with purebreds because most are as inbred as you are. Every dog I’ve ever had was a beautiful, lovable, loving mutt.

Had to add one more pic of and a link to a story from a few years back re: Rhodesian Ridgebacks, MelWest. It's regarding a RR in Germany that gave birth to a litter of 17 pups. Yup...SEVENTEEN. It took the Mama 26 hours to give birth to all of them, and of course the owner (an Animal Psychiatrist, of all things!) had to bottle feed them with a special milk as well the first four weeks to get them all through. Pretty cool!

nonsense, there are a few breeders, but nothing compared to all the hundreds of thousands mutt owners. Why pay 5k for a dog? Are you serious? I hobby breed french bulldogs ( even though theyre originally from England. Englishman took them with them while working in France during the Industrial Revolution; and we know anything made in England is good stuff right?) People buy my frenchies (depending on color and parents) between $4k and $7500. They pay that much because 1. they want an exquisite dog, like a bottle of fine wine. Not the cheap stuff, the good stuff. Theyre registered AKC , with champion bloodlines. If a dog doesnt have champion bloodlines, he/she doesnt stay in my breeding program. 2. They want a dog that doesnt bark (frenchies rarely bark). 3. They dont want a dog that sheds and has alot of allergies. 4. their coats are like fleece, like a fine linen. 5. theyre not hyper dipshit dogs. Theyre smart, athletic, but dont need much exercise. They're the perfect house/apt dog. I ship alot of my pups to the big cities, chicago, ny because people that live in high rises love them. No bark, not alot of exercise, but their conformation, disposition, coat and eyes are like a bottle of fine wine or expensive cigar. Some people who like the finer things in life, who like expensive wines, cigars, whiskey also want an exquisite dog to match. They show your elite. You could have a ford dog or a range rover dog. Thats why people pay 5-7k per puppy. They want the best of the best. They want their puppy manufactured by the the best breeding engineers in the biz.

That is bullshit. You haven't been the best at anything. There is just as many breeders with their puppy mills. I will never give 5k for a dog. I get that kind of money from bulls. You know those animals who put food on your table. Or shoes on your feet. Or in your case make your purses. This was a good thread until you came.

bullshat. That why you have registration and pedigrees.
No it's not. You have the same thing with cattle. I know we have them. We also have people who fudge on their info. You have no idea what your are talking about.

@Otis Blake...What was the verdict, Otis?

Whirlwind weekend.

Hannah is our new girl. Black. She ran over to my wife. My wife picked her up, and the love connection was made. Not the top specimen among her siblings at 8 weeks, but meant to be.

The experience was awesome. Met Hannah's parents. Spent time with some other families. One from NC. One from AL.

Ride home allowed for great bonding. She had one accident when we got home and I didn't move fast enough, but she's already letting us know when she needs to go.

I will post pics when I figure out that process. ;)

Southern Oak gets an A+.

sounds like your mad that i get more for my frenchies than you do for your bulls. I know that i know alot more about dogs than you do. I have some bulls too, so pipe down, would ya?

you're an idiot. dog registration and pedigrees are completely different than cows. You cant fool the AKC very easy. People may try but they dont succeed. Get a grip.

You are an idiot if you think people can't and haven't fooled the AKC. We dna test. Where you have people involved there can and will be people who take advantage of it. Who would have ever thought that something could be made to scan credit cards in your wallet or purse. You are only fooling yourself.
