looking at the ASU - SDSU game from this weekend, it was the close of the game and ASU was driving... the ASU receiver had the ball at the 2 down 7. He was "targeted" and lost the ball. The SDSU player was ejected and the 15 yard penalty was assessed.. but with seconds left on the clock and the ball on the 35 instead of the 2 this was not enough and ASU lost. SDSU celebrated what could be viewed as a win guaranteed through a well timed penalty.
The question is, should targeting be a spot foul? Is it worth losing a player for part of a game to lock up a victory? Could this become a trend?
or
Do you award a "reception" when the player did not catch the ball? Is that a fair penalty?
Good points in the article... I can see both sides and would like the rules committee to at least discuss it in the winter...
