Movies are more spectacular than ever with breathtaking CGI and crazy props, but I can't but help the writing/acting has suffered greatly. Shows that don't rely on CGI (Succession for instance) are still great and do well with plots and character development, but action movies especially seem devoid of plot. It's almost like watching porn, 5 minutes in you want to turn it off cause you're done. Rehashes and reboots seem to dominate Hollywood and original ideas are few and far between. Everyone seems to be more interested in modernizing movies instead of developing original content. I have Superhero fatigue to say the least.

Who is this generations Bruce Willis or Jack Nicholson? Days of Dinero, Pesci, Pacino, Liotta, Stallone, etc are over.

A lot of it is hedging where you can make your money. A well scripted, non-action movie is a bigger risk now than it used to be.

Studios used to be able to essentially have a 2nd box office on rentals, which worked well for lower budget movies that caught buzz.

But that’s all gone so they have to make as much as they can up front now. Hence why we see so much tied to existing IPs and sequels. It’s at least an already guaranteed box office.

@zbleezy makes sense.

There’s lots of great independent films. Actors you can really count on for substance - older are Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton. Christian Bale immerses himself. Jeremy Renner. Eric Bana. To use St Louis theaters as an example, you don’t go to the big screens at West Olive 16. You go to the intimate little screens and traditional seating at Frontenac.

The entire industry is tanking, with the exception of Dream’s comments. Some good Indys, but the last few years the movies have been total sophomoric garbage. Not only the writing, but also the acting. The other thing I have noticed with many films, is that when they run out of budget, they abruptly end the film. Film endings have become beyond disappointing.

Streaming is killing the “big” movie industry. We will see fewer great movies in the future, but instead more great series. The streaming lends to the need for content and for a reason to attract people to your service. A 2 hour movie doesn’t attract and keep people, but series do.

I'd say movies are trash and series have definitely gotten better.

I don't even know what to think or the new Bond tbh

I tend to agree with this. My young adult children and teens won’t watch a movie but will binge over and again The Office, Friends, and contemporary shows.

Smart devices are ruining the attention span of the current generations(and older ones as well)such that commitment toward singular tasks are childlike.

You claim actors are worse and bring up Liotta and Stallone as examples of good actors? Ok

Was Schwarzenegger a good actor?

They're both icons, whether you like them or not.

Ray Liotta was masterful in Goodfellas.
