No real takeaways from tonight's practice. It was more of a walkthrough if anything.
The highlight of practice was a punt return competition among four students to see who could catch a punt. Two people did.
Anyway.
From what I understand, this quarterback race is now neck and neck between Brady Cook and Sam Horn.
Horn had a strong practice yesterday. They like his playmaking ability and he's getting better at having command over the offense and things like that. I'd still say Cook starts the first game but that doesn't mean too much.
I'm hearing that it's only a matter of time before Brett Norfleet is the feature tight end. Now, I don't know if he starts in the first quarter or half of the season but probably at some point if he keeps this pace up he will.
Jordon Harris is also looking good. Seems like these two will eventually be the 1-2 punch of the tight end position.
If the season started today the offensive line would be:
Left tackle: Javon Foster
Left guard: Xavier Delgado
Center: Connor Tollison
Right guard: Cam'Ron Johnson
Right tackle: Armand Membou
However, the season doesn't start today. They're still figuring out what pieces go where and who can do what. So, this isn't set in stone by any means.
It looks like Marcellus Johnson will be the utility guy and the first off of the bench. I told you he's been practicing with the second string at guard. He can also play left tackle and right tackle. Again, plenty of time left in camp for things to change. I'm just letting you know what's going on as of today.
Free safety Jaylon Carlies has been dealing with a minor undisclosed injury that may keep him out another week but he should be good to go by the season opener. Seems to be more cautionary as the reason why he is being held out. The safety depth is pretty deep and it's still August, so there's no real need to rush him back.
Linebacker Chad Bailey also was dealing with an undisclosed injury but he's "full go" going forward. I did see him tonight during the walkthrough.
Freshman safety Phillip Roche has been doing well and the same can be said for safety Tyler Hibbler.
