We are giving so much attention and praise to the healthcare professionals , deservedly so, who are front and center in this crisis treating patients. But they aren’t the only people on the front lines.
The environmental service workers (“janitors” or “housekeepers”) who work in our medical facilities are so critical and valuable in minimizing the spread of infections like this one. Of all of the thankless jobs, they have the most important. They get looked at and often treated like “the help”, but they are “THE” help right now. They get paid far too little for how important they are. If anyone was in a position to say “this isn’t worth it” and stop coming to work right now it should be them. Many of them taking public transportation to get to work.
When you are released back into the wild and see them in action again, thank them. If you hire or supervise them like I do, give them a raise and reconsider how important cleaning well and sanitizing really is.
