As some of you know, I tracked every offensive possession the last 8 games looking at a variety of factors. Namely whether the shot was A. a product of the halfcourt offense or not; B. Clean or Contested and C. a Make or a Miss.
With a lot of time at home, I've crunched some of those numbers.
In the last 8 games...
Mizzou shot 39-130 (30%) on clean looks from 3 point range generated in the half court offense. They shot 42-63 (66.6%) on clean looks generated in the offense from two point range.
Of contested two point shots generated in the offense, Mizzou shot 58-144 (40.2%) By my numbers, they shot 3-9 (33%) on contested 3 point shots within the offense.
Their eFG% on all contested shots in the half court offense was 40.85%.
Their eFG% on all clean shots in the half court offense was 52.07%
Their eFG% on all shots generated in the half court was 47.11%
To put that in comparison context, when our "offense" generated a look that wasn't contested, Mizzou still shot 7% worse than the best team in the country shot on ALL of their attempts. It would've ranked 42nd overall nationally in eFG%. Now granted, that sheds away high percentage looks on offensive rebounds, transition points etc. But it also sheds away all contested shots in the half court. That's astounding.
Even when Mizzou was playing some of their better ball of the season...they had 30+ more clean looks than contested looks in their half court...they still were not making clean looks.
It defies explanation how 6 returning guys could shoot 300+ 3's and cumulatively shoot over 40%, and they combine for 39-130 on uncontested 3 point attempts.
The good news is that the offense was generating good looks and putting previously proven guys in spots to do damage. And if they get back to making shots, a lot of things improve. The bad news is that they missed, missed and missed some more. Clean 3's should lead to makes 40%+ of the time, if not more. And if they don't get back to making open shots, it's hard to see a path towards marked improvement.
